In 1975 the first US-USSR cinematic co-production was started. It was a children's movie that had Hollywood stars (Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, Ava Gardner, Cicely Tyson) in front of the camera and had Soviet technicians working behind it. The legendary George Cukor was brought in to direct.
The US actors didn't expect was just what the conditions in Soviet Union were really like. The high minded production would become a quagmire of restarts, reshoots, sick cast members, and a production that would drag on for months.
This episode of The Industry tells the story of what happened on that long shoot in Leningrad.
